Failure Mode and Effects Analysis

State-Of-The-Art Analysis Tool for Design and Process FMEAs and FMECAs

Relex FMEA was designed to handle your Failure Mode and Effects Analyses with unsurpassed power and flexibility. The methodology contained within Relex FMEA allows you to quickly and easily identify the potential failure modes of your system and prioritize them by their risk to system operation, safety or customer satisfaction.

Various industries have their own FMEA standards, all fully supported by Relex. Aerospace and defense companies generally use either the MIL-STD-1629 FMECA standard (the C in FMECA represents the Criticality calculation) or the SAE ARP5580 FMEA standard. Automotive suppliers use SAE J1739, or the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, and GM FMEA methodologies. Other industries generally adopt one of these standards, sometimes customizing them to meet their own requirements. Relex supports these various standards as well as allowing you to customize them or create combinations to meet your unique needs.

Relex FMEA supports both Design and Process FMEAs. Design FMEAs are used to analyze a system design and determine how its potential failure modes affect the system operation, and then is used to prioritize failure modes based on their risk to system operation, safety or customer satisfaction. The design may consist of both hardware and software, and the analysis can be performed at any level from the piece part up to the system. Process FMEAs, in contrast, are used to analyze how failures in the manufacturing or service process affect system operation or customer satisfaction.

Easily Reuse or Combine Past FMEAs or Sections of FMEAs

With Relex' intuitive "system tree" interface, you can easily reuse and combine FMEAs of your standard designs, or even subsections of past projects. Simply open the existing FMEA project and your new one simultaneously, and then "drag and drop" the appropriate subassembly from the old system tree to the appropriate place in the new system tree. The entire FMEA section is then copied into your new project!

If you're also using the Reliability or Maintainability Prediction modules, that data is also copied into the new project!

It's just as easy as moving files between directories in Windows Explorer!

Achieve True Failure Prevention

Relex provides a number of ways to ensure that your FMEA accomplishes its true purpose: failure prevention.  Relex FMEA uses failure mode libraries that contain the failure modes and causes associated with any type of part or assembly. As you add (or even import) components to Relex FMEA, failure modes and their causes are automatically assigned to them using these built-in modes libraries. This not only provides tremendous timesavings and improves consistency throughout your analysis, but also ensures that your analysis considers all known or potential modes & causes of failure each and every time!  These fully-customizable libraries can contain all of your past known problems and their known causes for any class of part or assembly.

In addition, Relex comes with extensive libraries of failure modes already built in! These editable libraries contain failure modes from a variety of sources and include an extensive array of electronic and mechanical parts.

Secondly, since you can easily include FMEAs from past projects or your standard designs, your new FMEAs will always also include the design or manufacturing quality controls that you have developed to mitigate the risk of the failure modes in the past!

No More Retyping The Same Repetitive Phrases Over And Over Again!

You can associate any field in the FMEA with a phrases file. As you enter new data into the field, it is automatically added to the phrases file. If you want to re-use the phrase on another part in the FMEA, it is available to you in a drop-down choice box. Just point, click, and you're done! An added benefit to phrases files: lets say you decide that you want to use a different way to describe something such as the effect of failure. Just change it once in the phrases file, and the change will be automatically reflected throughout your analysis!

Automatically Links to the Other Relex Modules

Relex FMEA may be used as either a stand-alone package or in conjunction with other Relex modules. Since all Relex products share the same database, information provided in other modules is immediately available to Relex FMEA. As you define the system hierarchy and add parts, that data is recognized in all Relex packages.

Relex FMEA also has access to failure rates calculated by the Relex Reliability Prediction module. Any time these failure rates are updated, the changes are instantly taken into account in Relex FMEA. Using Relex' innovative Fault Tree/FMEA integration, you can generate a fault tree showing all failure modes that contribute to a given end effect.

Full-Featured Custom Reporting

Relex' reporting utility does not lock you in to a fixed set of reports & formats. It includes a full-featured report definition utility that allows you to define what your reports include and look like. You have full control over everything in the report: data fields to include, sort/select criteria, report layout, headers, footers, etc. You can even include graphics images (like your company's logo) in them!

Of course Relex ships with dozens of standard reports included, which you can tailor to suit your needs.

Peace of Mind

Relex has been in business since 1986, and due to its power, flexibility and user-friendliness, it is used by tens of thousands of engineers in dozens of different industries around the world! Relex software is now in Version 7.2, and Relex is continually adding powerful new features, functions and modules to their software. This provides you with the assurance that your investment in Relex will be supported for the foreseeable future, and that Relex will always support the latest trends and developments in R&M modeling techniques and software interfaces.
